Partner Rules for Mystery Booster Commander Draft
When mono-color legends can pair like partners—and when printed partner still matters.
Partner is one of Commander’s most build-defining keywords, and Mystery Booster Commander Edition adds a draft-only exception that expands pairing beyond printed text. In Commander Draft events using this product’s boosters, Wizards allows players to treat certain commanders as though they have partner even when the card face says nothing about pairing. Understanding eligibility prevents illegal decks, broken expectations at casual tables, and arguments during deck registration at MagicCon Atlanta or home Festival in a Box nights.
This page covers the MBC draft exception. For partner’s baseline rules, color identity stacking, and interaction with printed partner pairs reprinted in the box, also read Partner Mechanics.
The official exception
From Wizards’ release notes: In Commander Draft events using Mystery Booster Commander Edition boosters, you may treat any eligible commander that has one or fewer colors in its color identity and does not already have partner as though it has partner.
Breaking that down:
- Event type: Commander Draft with MBC boosters—not your weekly hundred-card Commander league unless the organizer explicitly adopts this exception.
- Color identity cap: Zero or one color. A two-color legend like a conventional Rakdos commander is ineligible, even if you wish to pair it with a mono-white legend.
- No printed partner: Legends that already say partner—Akroma, Vision of Ixidor and Krark, the Thumbless appear in release materials—do not gain a third partner slot. They follow normal partner rules and may pair with other partner creatures or eligible legends under the exception.
- As though it has partner: Both chosen commanders must satisfy partner requirements as the game begins. Losing partner-like status mid-game does not remove commander status.
What this enables in practice
The exception exists because twenty-card boosters and sixty-card pools make single-color commitment risky. Allowing two mono legends merges pools, widens playable spells, and mirrors the design goal Gavin Verhey and Eric Engelhard stated: make more commanders viable during a single chaotic draft.
Examples players chase:
- Two mono-color legends with complementary abilities—one generates tokens, one pumps them—without needing either card to mention partner.
- A colorless commander paired with a mono-color legend, because colorless identity counts as zero colors and satisfies the “one or fewer” clause when interpreted as within the threshold.
- Printed partner plus an eligible mono legend where rules allow, expanding combinations beyond original partner pairs.
Always verify combined color identity when selecting spells. Partner merges identities; every card in the deck must remain legal in the combined set unless a Rulebreaker commander ability applies—and Rulebreaker deck modifications apply only when that Rulebreaker card is your designated commander, not silently to a partner.
What the exception does not do
It does not apply to Constructed Commander by default. Cards become legal in eternal Constructed formats on their own schedule—59 new cards plus one previously digital print after Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026—but the partner exception remains a Limited event rule.
It does not bypass two-color commanders. If your pool’s best legend is two colors, you cannot invoke the exception to add a second commander.
It does not override partner restrictions on backgrounds, Friends Forever, or other alternate pairing mechanics unless Wizards publishes explicit interactions. Stick to release notes text for MBC pods.
It does not let you ignore color identity on non-Rulebreaker cards. Partner widens which commanders you may have, not which spells you may play, except where Rulebreaker explicitly expands categories for its commander.
Printed partner in the same draft
Mystery Booster Commander Edition reprints well-known partner legends. Normal partner rules apply to them: they may pair with another partner creature or with an eligible commander under the exception if that commander lacks printed partner and has one or fewer colors.
You may even draft two copies of the same partner legend and run both as commanders in Commander Draft because duplicates are allowed—track commander tax separately for each casting from the command zone, as Wizards notes in release materials.
Registration and table etiquette
At organized events, announce both commanders during deck registration. Casual pods should agree before game one whether they are using the MBC exception— importing it into unrelated Commander nights causes confusion.
If one commander is a playtest or acorn card, partner rules still function for tonight’s Limited legality even though that card may be illegal in Constructed Commander later. Legality layers are separate; see Playtest Cards and Alchemy Acorn.
Strategy implications during the draft
When passing pick-two packs, signal partner-friendly pools by taking strong mono legends early in pack one if the seat supports it. Hate-drafting mono legends is weaker in pick-two because you still take two cards—denial must cost little opportunity.
If you commit to the exception, prioritize mana fixing and low-color-cost spells that remain castable under combined identity. Partner decks fail when each half of the pool expects different halves of the mana base.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers players look up before and after a Mystery Booster Commander event.
Can any mono-color legendary creature use the partner exception?
Yes, if it has one or fewer colors in identity, lacks printed partner, and you are in a Commander Draft using Mystery Booster Commander Edition boosters.
Can I pair two two-color commanders using this rule?
No. Each commander must have one or fewer colors in its color identity to qualify for the exception.
Does the exception work in my regular Commander league?
Not unless your organizer explicitly adopts it. It is defined for Commander Draft events with MBC boosters.
Can I run two copies of the same commander as partners?
In Commander Draft, duplicates are allowed. You may run two identical eligible legends as commanders and track commander tax separately.
How does partner interact with Rulebreaker commanders?
Rulebreaker deck construction applies only when that Rulebreaker card is your commander. Partner does not automatically spread Rulebreaker permissions to the other commander.
