Commander Draft Hub

Commander Draft with Mystery Booster Commander Edition is the reason this product exists. Wizards did not ship a box of random Commander staples and call it a day—they rebuilt Limited around twenty-card boosters, a pick-two cadence, and post-draft deck construction that mirrors Commander color identity, commander tax, and multiplayer politics while allowing duplicates that normal Constructed Commander forbids. If you have drafted Standard sets but never Commander Draft, treat this hub as your table-side briefing before the first pack crack.

The product math

One sealed box contains 24 boosters × 20 cards. An eight-player pod consumes exactly three packs per player, which means one box supports a full draft with no spare packs—plan event logistics accordingly. Smaller groups can still draft with fewer players, but card quality variance increases because fewer packs feed the pool. Convention organizers at MagicCon Atlanta and home hosts using Festival in a Box should confirm headcount before cracking product.

Pick-two flow at a glance

Each player opens one booster at a time, selects two cards, passes the remainder, and repeats until the pack is empty. Direction alternates left, right, left across the three packs. When every pack is drafted, each player owns sixty picked cards—their card pool—and may add unlimited basic lands while building a minimum sixty-card deck that includes a commander. The full step-by-step, including seating randomization and pile etiquette, lives in How to Draft. Slot-by-slot pack anatomy—colored slices, commander slots, playtest, and acorn foil—is on Booster Contents.

Deck construction differences

After drafting, you are not building the hundred-card Singleton list Commander players know from EDH. You are building at least sixty cards from a finite pool with duplicates allowed. Color identity still governs nonbasic inclusions, and your commander must sit in the deck or command zone according to normal Commander rules. Mana base tuning, role division between creatures and interaction, and when to prioritize fixing over bombs are covered in Deck Building.

The partner exception

This product’s signature Limited tweak: in events using Mystery Booster Commander Edition boosters, a legendary creature with one or fewer colors in its color identity and without printed partner may be treated as though it has partner. That means two mono-color legends—or a mono legend plus a colorless commander—can lead the same draft deck even when neither card mentions partner. Eligibility, edge cases with backgrounds, and table enforcement tips are in Partner Rules. For the keyword’s baseline behavior outside this exception, see Partner Mechanics.

After the draft: playing Commander

Official guidance assumes eight drafters split into two four-player games. Nothing stops a pod from playing one oversized table, but mana development and combat math change. Commander damage, commander tax, and color identity restrictions apply as in sanctioned Commander once decks are registered. Remind players that playtest and acorn cards they drafted are fine in this Limited context even though those same cards are illegal in Constructed Commander—see Playtest Cards and Alchemy Acorn if someone challenges a Panglacial Shinobi pick.

Several draft picks change deck construction only if they become your commander. Rulebreaker legends such as Seluma, Light of Aysen or Tolabow, Loch Rascal bend deckbuilding before the game begins; read Rulebreaker before committing early to a build-around. Reprints with partner still work normally and stack with the draft exception when eligible.

Where to draft

Mystery Booster Commander Edition premiered at Gen Con 2026 and rolls out broadly through MagicCon: Atlanta (November 13–15, 2026) and Festival in a Box on MagicSecretLair.com. This hub focuses on rules and strategy; availability timing follows Wizards’ Secret Lair announcements.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers players look up before and after a Mystery Booster Commander event.

How many cards do I pick per selection in Commander Draft?

Two cards per pick. You pass the remaining cards in the pack after each selection until the booster is empty.

Which direction do packs pass?

Left for pack one, right for pack two, left for pack three—the standard pick-two pattern used in this product's release notes.

Can my draft deck include multiple copies of the same card?

Yes. Unlike Constructed Commander, Commander Draft decks may include any number of copies of cards in your pool, except basic lands which are unlimited from outside the pool.

How many lands should I add after drafting?

There is no fixed number. Add as many basic lands as you need to make a playable sixty-plus-card deck from your pool; most drafters aim for twenty-two to twenty-six lands depending on curve.
